5 Tips on how to work from home productively

  • Take full breaks - It is easy to not take a full lunch, or step away from your desk when working from home. Having time away from your screen can help increase productivity by refreshing your mind. Your body also needs to move, if possible you could try to leave your home, as long as you are conforming with current NHS guidelines, the fresh air and natural light will do you good. A short walk or going into the garden will be beneficial. Apps such as TimeOut for Mac and Smart Break for Windows can be useful.

  • Maintain regular hours - Setting a schedule is very important, and remember to keep to it when possible. Having guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps many  workers maintain work-life balance.

  • Create a morning routine - It can be beneficial to have a routine in place to establish when you are starting work. As you wont be travelling to work, this can help you become mentally and physically ready for the day. This could be making breakfast or a cup of coffee, it might be working out, then having a shower and getting dressed. Whatever your personal routine is, to keep constant with this when possible is important.

  •  Keep a separate working space - Not everyone has a separate office in their home, and keeping a personal and work computer isn’t always realistic. Instead, you could dedicate a desk or area specifically for work. This can help build a distinction between work and personal time. You may be less productive in an area you associate with personal or relaxation time. If this is not possible for you, developing a distinction could be as simple as connecting your laptop to a monitor during working hours, and using it by itself for personal use.

  • Communicate - Not being in an office with your colleagues, means communication via video or audio is very important. This will help you keep a good sense of direction and ensure productivity! – it may feel like over communication at first, but this is necessary, especially when working closely in a team.
